State Releases List of Top 35 Ohio Nursing Homes
Families Speak Out About Loved Ones' Nursing Home Care

COLUMBUS - Family members are generally satisfied with the level of care their loved ones receive in Ohio nursing facilities, according to the results of the 2006 Nursing Home Family Satisfaction Survey, released today by the Ohio Department of Aging.

"Ohio is one of only a handful of states that conducts such surveys," said Merle Grace Kearns, Director, Ohio Department of Aging. "The results demonstrate our commitment to quality care for Ohio's seniors."

The survey asked family members of nursing home residents about their satisfaction with a number of factors at that facility. Results show that family members rate more than a third of Ohio's homes as above average. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services awards facilities with above average scores an additional "quality point" in a reimbursement formula that rewards quality.

Researchers identified two key questions for families to consider: "Overall, do you like this facility?" and "Would you recommend this facility to a family member or friend?" Thirteen facilities received a score of 100 on both questions.

"We are pleased that 328 Ohio nursing homes scored above the statewide average of 86.6," said Beverley Laubert, the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman. "We also appreciate the more than 23,000 family members who took the time to participate in the survey."

The survey was conducted for the Ohio Long-Term Care Consumer Guide between July and December of 2006 by the Scripps Gerontology Center of Miami University, under contract with the Ohio Department of Aging. In 2007, residents of Ohio nursing facilities will be surveyed about their satisfaction with the facilities. Family members will be surveyed again in 2008. Full survey results will be available on the Ohio Long-term Care Consumer Guide (www.ltcohio.org) next week.

This news comes during "Visit a Nursing Home Week" when families and others are encouraged to visit a local nursing home during the holiday season.

The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, housed within the Department of Aging, works with nursing homes and consumers to maintain a high standard of care. All Ohioans may call the Ombudsman Office toll-free at 1-800-282-1206 to report any problems they see with any long-term care provider or to receive more information on resident rights and nursing home quality.
